1885/1933. Specialized Sven Hedin Collection. Sven Anders Hedin, (19 February 1865 – 26 November 1952) was a Swedish geographer, topographer, explorer, photographer, travel writer and illustrator of his own works. During four expeditions to Central Asia, he made the Transhimalaya known in the West and located sources of the Brahmaputra, Indus and Sutlej Rivers. He also mapped lake Lop Nur, and the remains of cities, grave sites and the Great Wall of China in the deserts of the Tarim Basin. In his book Från pol till pol (From Pole to Pole), Hedin describes a journey through Asia and Europe between the late 1880s and the early 1900s. While traveling, Hedin visited Turkey, the Caucasus, Tehran, Iraq, lands of the Kyrgyz people and the Russian Far East, India, China and Japan. The collection contains letters written by him from his various expeditions. A highlight seams to be a chinese set of four, issued to support his expedition, signed by him, in addition some letters franked with this issue. Also included picture post cards and Liebig pictures. In detail the collection consists of: 1885-9-14 Russia, Caucasus Balakhany postal station cover. A double-weight cover with two 7 kop. Cancelled Balakhany P.S. 1 Bakins. G. 1 on 13 Sep. 1885 and 14 sep. and sent by the explorer Sven Hedin to his father in Stockholm via Baku, where it was postmarked Baku 3 Pochtovaya Kontora 3 on 14 and 15 Sep. Backstamped in Stockholm on 18 Oct. Balakhany was a suburb of Baku. Hedin was tutoring the son of a Swedish employee of Nobel Oil. Has a 20mm tear on front. This Cover is illustrated in Peter Ashford's Imperial Russian Stamps Used in Transcaucasia, p. 565 1897-3-21 bearing 30 Oe. Brown and 50 Oe. Grey dotted rim d.s. Stockholm rg. 31 3 1897 on registered cover to Irkutsk/Russia and fwd. To St. Petersburg; sent by Ludwig Hedin to his son "le Docteur Sven Hedin", six daters on reverse plus fwd. Notes, attractive. There are similar covers from 1896 and Jan. 1897 to Hedin in Beijing. This covers has been sent on his way back before he returned to Kashgar/China at the end of the century in 1899. 1899 A complete set of 6 Liebig collector Cards about Sven Hedin first expedition in 1899, colorized, vf 1899-1947 a collection of ca. 20 Sven Hedin related Covers to his father, sister or to himself, interesting covers from Peking with registered and autographed covers, interesting frankings, etc. 1900 Post card with lithography of Hedins trip through the Gobi desert, mint, in German 1932 China, Ephemera: Sven Hedin a selection of 40 different photolithographic labels, "Sven Hedin - Zu Land nach Indien, gummed and perforated, unusual. A selection of 25 labels has been sold at Interasia Auctions in 01/2014 for HK$ 1,840.- 1930-11-19 registered Cover from Hedin in Peking to his sister Alma in Sweden, with large wachs seal on reverse, very rare, together with newspaper article from Göteborgs Posten (7. April 1969) depicting the cover. 1931-6-2 registered A.R. "Sino-Swedish Sinkiang Expedition" printed Envelope, official Expedition Cover to Sven Hedin in Stockholm endorsed "Double registration" bearing Sinkiang 6c. Vertical pair, 10c. Vertical pair and single 30c., cancelled by Tihwa/(Urumtsi) bilingual c.d.s. with framed registration h.s. and "AR" h.s. alongside, showing Chinese censor label and Tahcheng transit c.d.s. on reverse, some light wrinkling, still fine and scarce.
