1835 (15 Nov): Calcutta 'Half Postage Paid' datestamp "G.P.O./Hf.Pt.Pd. (2)/(15 Nov)/18(35)" in black (Giles No.20, in use only from June to Nov. 1835 = RARE) completed in m/s on reverse of cover from Calcutta to Berhampore via Krishnagar. (2as Half postage paid + 2as payable at destination = 4as.) A VERY RARE HANDSTAMP - ONE OF THE 3 KNOWN. (Note: As per Post Office Rule 10 of 1813, the natives had the option to pay 'half postage' for their letters addressed to places in Bengal Presidency: remaining to be collected from the addressee. This was again clarified by P.O. Rules X and XI of 1830 Act. This 'Half Post Paid' system was discontinued after the passing of the P.O. Act of 1837.)
